Arthur Kirkland is about the same as you are familiar with-- he just never smiles anymore. Why? Well, many factors have caused it. To start with, back when he was a young nation. He was beat up by his brothers a lot, mainly when he was caught smiling.
Fast forward a few hundred years. All those wars. All the insane kings. All the sadistic kings. Let's not forget Thomas Wriothesley and Richard Rich! Never heard of them? Lucky you. Arthur developed a certain.. trait.. from them. Not a good one at all.
And then Queen Elizabeth Tudor. That was the main reason he stopped smiling. Because.. Every time she caught him smiling, she slapped him. Elizabeth was known to frequently rage at her ladies-in-waiting during the later years of her reign, but hardly anyone knows that she hated people smiling as well.
Arthur soon stopped smiling during her reign, and when she finally died, that just ended it all. He had grown to love little Liza, having known her all his life. He still has her coronation ring, which symbolised her marriage with England.
And let's not forget the Revolutionary War, yes? Arthur thought he had found someone to stay by him. He even smiled sometimes around America, when the youngster was being especially cute. He did not know, however, that all his wars with France was causing the younger nation to loathe the Briton. But they were.
That day was one which Arthur will never forget, and he cursed himself for even letting someone get closer to him. Everyone leaves him sooner or later. Why begin to trust when they all leave?
That's not to say he does not have friends. Granted, he has very few, but at least he tries, yes? Romania and Norway about his closest friends for now. They make up the so-called 'Magic Trio'-which, even though everyone seems to think Arthur is not good at magic-he is much more advanced than he lets on.
He only keeps it hidden so he can do it in private. And see his beloved Elizabeth. Necromancy is his specialty, unfortunately. It ends up draining him, and one time nearly killed him, but he is never going to give it up. He loves seeing his Elizabeth too much for that.
Oh, and what do we have here? Yes.. Arthur doesn't mind death. He's caused so many of them, why should he care anymore? As was mentioned before, that certain trait he gained?
Lust murder. That may be the only time you'd ever see him smile.. But honestly, would you want to then? I wouldn't. Stay away from him when he shows signs of slight sadism. Although he prefers masochism, he can swing both ways.
He will fall into depression sometimes. Well, most of the time, really. But it's hard to tell, as he never smiles anyway. One of the surefire ways to tell if he's depressed, is to listen to his voice. It will take on a colourless tone; emotionless.
When he's not depressed, his tone is usually one of contempt. Or suspicion. So, which one would you like? Him addressing you in contempt, or him speaking in a tone that resembles a zombie?
As noted, he can do very advanced Dark magic. It drains him, every time he does it. One day, he might just die from doing the wrong spell.
But.. How do you know he doesn't want that? After all, no one seems to care for him. Everyone avoids him. They say he should go to Broadmore. Maybe death is what he wants.
He may pretend to smile sometimes, in fact, if you are close enough to him, you may even catch the faintest smile. The closest you're ever going to get, however, is just a ghost of a smile. Like he wants to smile...
But he's forgotten how to.
